As we enter this Global Media and Information Literacy Week, we are invited to raise awareness, celebrate the progress achieved towards Media and Information Literacy for all, and reflect on the importance of media and information literacy (MIL) in our increasingly complex digital world. This week is about raising awareness of how essential it is for individuals to engage with the information.

Media and Information Literacy enable individuals and groups to navigate today’s information and communications environment. It covers a large spectrum of knowledge to better search, access, critically evaluate, use, and contribute to information and media content. It requires an ethical and purposeful understanding from the reader.

Our brains depend on information to work optimally. The quality of information we engage with largely determines our perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes. In an age full of contradictory messages and misinformation that can spread quickly and influence public perception and decision-making; being able to critically evaluate information is essential. It’s extremely important to foster media literacy, to empower individuals with the skills to discern credible information from unreliable sources, understand media narratives, and engage responsibly with digital content.

This year’s theme, “The New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information” highlights the critical role that media and information literacy (MIL) play in navigating our increasingly complex digital landscape. We can promote informed decision-making and strengthen our communities by enhancing these skills. We move toward the mission of media and information literacy for all.

To achieve this mission, we need to be equipped with media and information literacy competencies and must understand the stakes to contribute. Action such as philanthropy is a powerful tool for us to achieve this goal. By making a Goodwill Vow and donating to initiatives dedicated to improving literacy skills or spreading truthful and meaningful information, we help improve critical thinking and foster literacy skills in people as well as avoiding chains of misinformation, forming a more informed and resilient world.

Goodwill Vow is a platform that provides vetted organisations and causes that help you make donations to reliable and trusted NGO’s worldwide.

Let’s make your Goodwill Vow and take action to create a culture of informed and responsible media consumption! Let’s foster a well-informed society that can navigate the complexities of information!
