It is the International women’s day in this month of March, a day to celebrate the power and strength that is called Woman. As we celebrate lets take a look at 10 facts that has led to this special day for women.
- The earliest version of Women’s Day was organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909 at the suggestion of Theresa Malkiel.
- The idea of celebrating Women’s Day internationally was first proposed by Clara Zetkin, at an International Conference for Working Women in Copenhagen in the year 1910. This was unanimously agreed by 100 women delegates from 17 different countries.
- There was no set date for International Women’s Day as Americans celebrated National Women’s Day on the last Sunday of February and Russia on the last Saturday in February.
- International Women’s Day was held on March 8, for the first time in Germany in the year 1914.
- International Women’s Day was decreed a non-working day in former USSR on May 8, 1965 to commemorate the Outstanding merits of Soviet women in communistic construction during the Great Patriotic War.
- International Women’s Day was predominantly a communist holiday until around 1967 when it re-emerged in Europe on Women International Day of Struggle.
- 1975 has been proclaimed to be International Women’s Year as it marks the first World Conference on Women which took place in Mexico, 19 June – 2 July 1975.
- International Women’s Day became an official UN holiday in 1977 following the adoption by the UN General Assembly.
- International Women’s Day adopted themes to commemorate the celebrations from 1996.
- International Women’s Day is celebrated as an official holiday in over 28 countries.
